No one needs another reusable water bottle Christmas present (buying a bunch and reusing each less than 20-200 times is not eco-friendly!).
Your friend probably already has a nice mixer, a cast iron skillet, and a sous vide if they’re super into cooking, which rules out all the fancy gifts if you want to get them a unique present.
Funny/cute mugs are always cool, but you’ve already gotten one for everyone for the last three years! How many times can mugs with sassy sayings be funny? The answer is all the time, but that still doesn’t mean you should be that predictable.
What should you get your foodie loved ones for their birthday or Christmas gift??
Here are 10 perfect, unique gifts for foodies – gifts of stuff that they probably don’t have yet and that they’ll probably love. They’re great as Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, random gifts, etc – as long as the receiver loves cooking or eating food!
Science Food Books
The perfect gift for nerdy foodies
Does your friend like the intersection of science and food? Then they need a copy of The Food Lab by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt. If your friend is like me, you’ll know if they already have it if they talk about it all the goddamn time, because it’s that eye-opening for anyone who wants the technical background on making perfect food all the time.
Another perfect gift option for less science-y but still geek-y foodies is The Flavor Bible by Karen A. Page and Andrew Dornenburg- especially if they’re a creative in the kitchen who wants to know more about perfect flavor balances and making their own. This book even won a James Beard award!
Cookbooks based off their favorite thing
A fun gift for pop culture foodies
They probably don’t have a cookbook from their favorite book, movie, TV show, or video game! Do get one of these! Themed cookbooks are the perfect present for anyone with a slight pop culture obsession and a love of cooking.
Like if they’re a Harry Potter nerd, they need the (unofficial) Harry Potter cookbook. If they’re a Game of Thrones diehard, they’ll love the (official) Game of Thrones cookbook. There’s even a Mean Girls cookbook, a Walking Dead cookbook, and an Elder Scrolls cookbook!
Creative wine holders
For alcohol obsessed foodies
Is your friend more into drinking than cooking? Get them a wine holder! This is something they’ll always need, since there’s always wine they could be drinking. There are so many types out there, but if they like dogs and wine, they will fall in love with this one.
For the Instagram foodie
Help them get the perfect picture and also look extra when they go out by getting them a selfie light! These will help their food pictures look amazing- even when they’re taken in dimly lit restaurants. Don’t let your friend forget you when they become Instagram famous because of the selfie light you bought them in Christmas 2018.
Mason Jar Baking Mixes
For the baking foodie
Chance are, they already have the right utensils. Probably you shouldn’t get them more or else they’ll waste away, sad, unused.
Instead, help them put them to use by getting them a cute baking mix to make brownies, cookies, cakes, etc. These are the absolute best present to get when you want something sweet but with little effort- everything is measured out for you already! Plus you get a free mason jar!
DIY spice blends/rubs
For the savory foodie
Are they more on the savory side? For another cute, useful DIY gift, you could make them a spice rub or blend. This is another great present to get because you can use them on almost anything- stews, meats, veggies, etc, for tons of good flavor but little effort.
Not feeling creative enough to make your own? There are a bunch of sites that put together great recipes- here are some examples including a southwest blend, a curry, and even a vanilla extract!
For foodies who are also extra
Do you have those friends that only like over the top presents? If they’re also a foodie, get them a big gift bag of their favorite foods! Like they have tea ones, coffee ones, meats and cheeses, chocolate baskets, etc. And, this is also something you can easily DIY for a more personalized gift!
Food coloring books
For the lowkey adult
Sometimes the best foodie gifts aren’t actually food, but food related things that you can adult with. Like adult coloring books. Like food adult coloring books. Like taco coloring books, junk food coloring books, real food coloring books, or recipe coloring books (hey, this one still has a cooking use). Help your friend relax without having to binge eat.
Sustainable kitchenware that they’ll need to replace
If they’re into sustainability, you may not want to get them something that’s long lasting that they already have- since it’ll be harder to use it!
So consider something that’s more likely to be used, so it’s actually a sustainable gift. Cleaning supplies sounds unexciting, but if they’re made of bamboo, they’re super sexy. And everyone needs cleaning supplies regularly; you’re like taking away boring middle class responsibilities from them by getting this as a present. Another great idea is reusable beeswax wrap– which is the perfect alternative to plastic wrap, but wears out after a year or so, and they probably have a ton of things that could be wrapped.
Gift card at fav restaurant
For picky foodies
If you went through this list and still haven’t found the perfect gift, get them a gift card to one of their favorite restaurants or a restaurant they’ve always wanted to try! Food is always appreciated. No one will be sad if you give them an opportunity to do what they love (in this case, eat).
